DIY: Crayon Art

My first attempt at crayon art.

Harper's 3rd birthday is coming up and since I'm on vacation I should have lots of time to get all of my projects completed.  Ha!  Guess who else is on vacation...my two fabulous helpers.  Today we worked on some crayon art for the upcoming Magical Rainbow Unicorn Party.

Here's how we made ours...

DIY Cascarones...Confetti Eggs

My favorite part of our school carnival (which was called Fiesta with Friends) was the cascarones, or confetti eggs.  Such a silly thing to sneak up behind your friends and crack a confetti-filled egg shell over their head, but it was insanely fun.  Probably because they spent the rest of the carnival picking confetti out of their hair.  Needless to say, I had to make them for our upcoming fiestas.

If you're not afraid of a mess, surprise your guests with these!

1.  Start with raw eggs.

2.  Drill a small hole in the eggs.  I tried to make sure my holes weren't larger than the top of the egg, but don't stress too much about the size as you'll be covering later.

3.  Drain eggs of whites and yolk.  Rinse out and let dry.

 4.  Next is the dying process.  If you've got Easter egg dye left over, use that.  If not, make your own dye.  I use 1 cup of water, 1 tablespoon vinegar, and 20 drops of food coloring.

 5.  Dunk eggs in dye until desired color is reached (the longer you leave eggs in, the darker they will be).

6.  Let eggs dry completely.

7.  Fill eggs with confetti.  I used the holes left in my 3-hole punch.  I filled the eggs about half-way.  Heck, if we are going to make a mess then I want to do it right.

8.  Using tissue paper, cut a circle slightly larger than your hole.  Then use your glue to attach tissue paper to egg.  !Bien!

!Pinata Cookies!

Are you kidding me?  How insanely adorable are these Pinata Cookies from She Knows?  The tutorial makes it sound like a piece of cake (or piece of cookie?).  I'm going to attempt to make these for my nephew's birthday party this weekend.

Since it's so close to Cinco de Mayo, I knew I wouldn't have time to order a donkey-shaped cookie cutter online (without paying undesirable overnight fees), although Amazon had these available.  I recruited my dad to go to the local cake supply store that confirmed they had them in stock over the phone.  Double whoop for retired parents!

Maybe I need an elephant cookie cutter also so I can rock some political cookies when November is a little nearer.  :)

I'll let ya know how they turn out.  !Viva la fiesta!

DIY Ombre Valentine's Day

I heart everything ombre.  I've compiled some of my favorite diy stuff from the internet to use for Valentine's Day.  Best part of the versatility of the color palette is it lets me work in all sorts of shades of red and pink.

A DIY project for ya from Green Wedding Shoes...a darling backdrop.

A butter cream ombre cake with tutorial from Bubble and Sweet.

Or this yummy alternative.  I adore that the inside and outside have shades of pink.  Glorious Treats made this super cute cake.

A floral centerpiece that falls into the category of "Oh, I Could Totally Do That" and then I cry after three hours of trying to get it perfect from Hindsight Bride.

This is more my speed.  If you may a bunch of these babies with different shades, they'd so fit with the theme.

This Save the Date card could make a super sweet Valentine's Day card.  Find the tutorial at Green Wedding Shoes.

DIY No-sew Ribbon Wreath

I needed a little something for a homemade gift exchange, so I made this ribbon wreath.  I'm whatever level is below novice in sewing, so I made this diy no-sew version.

I started by covering the wreath in ribbon.  I secured the final bit of ribbon with a dressmaker's pin.

I used all of these (each was 3 yards), but a couple of coordinating yards I had at home.  Ribbon ain't cheap, so bring your coupons or wait for a good sale.  I ended up with a lot of ribbon that was narrow (3/8 in) which means you use a lot more of it to fill up the space.  My grand total was 23 yards of ribbons for this one!

Update:  Made a second wreath using the same colors and ornaments.  However, I used primarily 7/8 inch ribbon and used less than half of each spool.  This is a way more cost effective way to fill up the space.  I also recommend getting a couple of spools of ribbon with wire.  They poof nicely and fill up space also.

I cut the ribbon into 6.5 inch strips.  Then I made a loop.

Press the loop flat.

Add two or three loops per pin.

Using dressmaker's pins, attach the loops to the wreath.  Keep going and going and going.  When inserting pins on the outside of the wreath, keep the length of the pin in mind.  You don't want them poking out of the back.  Instead, insert them at an angle.

To hang the wreath, I took a longer piece of ribbon and tied it around the wreath.  I secured it with pins and then filled in around it.

I attached some ornaments with hot glue to fancy it up.
